EuclidIQ Showcases H.264 Bandwidth Savings at Streaming Media East 2015

IQ264 perceptual quality advancements demonstrated in both constant quality and rate-constrained modes.

EuclidIQ is showcasing significant H.264 bandwidth savings at booth 107 of the Streaming Media East 2015 conference, held today and tomorrow at the Hilton New York.

The company’s IQ264 compression suite, which has yielded an average of more than 20% bandwidth savings in subjective tests, does so without impacting video quality.

“Current IQ264 bandwidth savings average greater than 20% in double-blind subjective tests performed in a controlled viewing environment,” said Richard Wingard, CEO of EuclidIQ, “with some gains reaching more than 40% in both constant quality and rate-constrained modes.”

IQ264 uses a Unified Importance Map that is derived from a combination of spatial and temporal information, distinguishing between visually important and unimportant regions of a video frame.

The Unified Importance Map may include one or several of the following: artifact detection, contrast sensitivity, differential motion, edge strength, global motion, luminance, structural similarity, and variance.

“IQ264 intelligently combines spatial complexity and temporal contrast measurements,” said Dr. Nigel Lee, EuclidIQ’s Chief Science Officer. “We use perceptual quality discovery to determine the areas in every single video frame that are most noticeable to the human visual system.”

EuclidIQ is showcasing several videos in its booth, including a few from its latest testing round, which used rate-constrained, variable-bitrate encoding.

All encodes were generated from a reference x264 encoder, and several examples will be shown that compare x264 output versus output that combines IQ264 on top of x264.

“Gains from combining IQ264 on top of x264 are better than what x264 alone offers,” said Dr. Lee, “even when all x264 algorithms related to perceptual optimization, like adaptive quantization and psycho-visual optimization, are enabled in baseline x264.”

IQ264 can be adapted to augment any H.264-compliant encoder via EuclidIQ’s standalone API/SDK.

In addition, Streaming Media East 2015 attendees can get in on the action by taking the EuclidIQ Visual Challenge at the EuclidIQ booth.

Headquartered in Concord, MA, EuclidIQ has a legacy in solving complex video compression challenges. The company has two innovative technologies—EuclidVIsion (MPEG-2) and IQ264 (H.264)—that deliver significant bandwidth savings while maintaining visual quality. The company’s patented technologies augment standards-based encoders, and content encoded via EuclidIQ’s advanced algorithms can be decoded on any standards-based video decoder.
